Our FHE (family home evening- for our non-lds friends) lesson tonight was about obedience and attitude. Using the examples of Nephi (great attitude) and Laman (the opposite), we discussed what our reactions can be when we're asked to do something. Did, for example, Nephi jump for joy when his dad told him the Lord commanded him and his brothers to return to Jerusalem for the plates/scriptures? Was that the easiest thing? No, but he was willing to do it because he knew the Lord wouldn't ask without also making it possible. Because he prayed, listened, studied and lived the gospel, he knew the "dealings of that God who had created" him. The plates, the incident with the bow, building a ship- all challenging and not convenient, but Nephi went and he did.
With our everyday responsibilities, we have the choice to face them like a "Nephi" or like a "Laban." Each of the kids got a "Go and Do" chart. When we see them being kind, not complaining, serving others, obeying, etc., they get a mark and in the end, a prize of some sort.
A storm of hugs followed this proclamation. Sarah went to her room, cleaned the floor and made both her and Hannah's beds. Justin just cleaned the entire kids' bathroom (including toilet) and I can now hear him unloading the dishwasher. He asked if he could clean my bathroom, but he needs to go to bed! We shall see how long this lasts. : )

I love those kind of FHEs. Ours was pure craziness, with kids running all over the room, the youngest making as much noise as he could, and no one actually hearing and/or learning anything. Oh well.
